We have talked before about how pasta makes a great budget friendly dinner. Adding your own Homemade Spaghetti Sauce is super easy and taste lots better than the store bought sauce.
All this week we are sharing some “back to basics” recipes, the Tuna Macaroni Casserole is always a hit at our house, and we couldn’t get by without serving Spaghetti and Meatballs!
Our family loves Meatballs with our Spaghetti, which makes the sauce a little heartier, but you can certainly serve it plain or even with cooked ground beef too. In fact, our youngest is kind of a Meatball fanatic, he always has to have a few on the side to eat too.
This Sauce is pretty versatile too, you can also serve it as a dipping sauce for breadsticks, use it as a condiment on Meatball Hoagie or even add it on top of chicken for Chicken Parmesan. Having an easy go to sauce is great!
Easy to make Homemade Spaghetti Sauce. Recipe from PocketChangeGourmet.com
Ingredients
- 1 medium onion, chopped finely
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 can {16 oz} diced tomatoes
- 1 can {16 oz} tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons Italian Seasoning blend {oregano, basil, garlic, whatever you like}
Instructions
- Melt butter in a saucepan
- Add chopped onion and garlic, saute until onions are tender
- Add 1 tablespoon of Italian Seasoning
- Cook about 1 minute to get the onions and garlic seasoned
- Add the tomatoes and tomato sauce
- Add the other tablespoon seasoning
- Heat to boiling and reduce heat to simmer
- Simmer for about 30 minutes until thick
- This recipe is also great in the crockpot, after you saute the onions and garlic just add them to the crockpot and add the rest of the ingredients. Cook on low about 2 hours
- Optional: Add 1 pound cooked ground beef or meatballs

Thanks for sharing this! I do can spaghetti sauce, but this looks like a very simple and cannable recipe (maybe without the butter added). Have you ever canned it?

Hi Kim, I have not canned the spaghetti sauce, but I have frozen it before and it’s fine.
Thanks for stopping by and always leaving such great comments!

I’ve been looking for an easy and simple spaghetti sauce recipe I could make in the crock pot. I had planned on trying a different recipe this week for spaghetti night, but I think I’ll try yours instead.
I like the sliding display box you’ve added to the top of your home page, makes it loads easier to see your recent post.
