Whether you live in Chicago or not, this Chicago-Style Hot Dog Recipe is sure to please! Piled high with flavorful toppings, there’s nothing like a good hot dog recipe!

Depending on what region of the country you live, your Hot Dog toppings could vary a lot. Here in the Midwest, the Chicago-Style Hot Dog is most popular. Growing up here in Indiana, and living only about two hours from Chicago, I have to be honest, I had never tried a Chicago Dog until about 5 years ago.

So what exactly makes a Chicago Hot Dog Recipe different than the others?

Chicago Style Hot Dog

Not only are the toppings different, but the bun is a bit different as well. However, the Chicago Dog starts the same as many hot dogs, with a good quality all-beef frankfurter. We like Ball Park, they have one called “The Finest” that we found at Walmart, and it’s really good.

Let’s chat a minute about cooking hot dogs. While I love the flavor of a grilled hot dog, there is actually a traditional cooking method for hot dogs. First, you place the hot dogs in a large skillet and add about 1/2 cup of water and steam them. Then drain the water and brown the hot dogs. This whole process takes about 10 minutes.  Steaming the hot dogs before browning gives them a crisp outside and juicy center.

After you have a good hot dog, then you need a good bun. The Chicago-Style Hot Dog is served on a soft bun with poppy seeds.

Now, the best part, in my opinion, the toppings. This unique hot dog toppings include yellow mustard, sweet pickle, onions, pickle spear, tomatoes and celery seed.

Many moons ago, I worked at a local ice cream shop that also served hot dogs. I can’t begin to count the number of Chicago-Style Hot Dogs that I made and served while working there, but actually never ate them. Who would have known that years later I would be sharing them with you? Isn’t life funny sometimes?

Poppy seed buns make the hot dog for me! Hope you love it!

  1. Looks great! Thank you for sharing with us at #HomeMattersParty. We would love to have again next week.

  2. Craving a Chicago hot dog right now! I’m a Chicago native and am still here but I honestly don’e remember ever getting a pickle on my dog. The relish is already a pickle chopped up. The hot dog stands always just put a couple of slices of plain old cucumber. The celery salt made the cucumber and tomato taste all the more delicious.
