Locally Grown Produce at Walmart

Friday’s are typically Farmer’s Market Friday here, but today I have some exciting news for you about the Locally Grown Produce at Walmart. Let’s face it, sometimes we just don’t have the time to head to the Farmer’s Market, but we would love to buy fresh produce.

Walmart has listened to their customers and have made a commitment to double the amount of locally grown produce that they purchase. What does that mean for customers? In my opinion…it’s a win-win situation. The local farmers are able to provide Walmart with fruits and vegetables, which helps them and their families…and it’s great for the customer to be able to buy local produce.

Here in Northwest Indiana, we don’t have any produce ready yet, but it a few short weeks we will. There will be special signs in the stores to tell you where the locally grown produce is, and although my store didn’t have any large signs, they did have a sign above the produce similar to this one.

One of the ways that Walmart helps sustainability by purchasing local produce is by using what they call “Food Miles Calculator.” This calculator helps the Walmart buyers determine how far the produce will need to travel to the stores, therefore it arrives fresh. Read all about Walmart’s commitment to sell locally grown produce.
