If you could see into our kitchen cupboards what you would see are dozens of individual spices, so many that until we did a major organization of the spice drawer you opened the cupboard doors at risk of life or limb. Well I might be exaggerating a bit but I did get bonked on the head once and it left a bump on my noggin for a few days. So to justify adding another container to the spice drawer that spice needs to earn it’s place among the other spices.

We don’t share very many baking or dessert recipes here so you may be wondering why in the world we would be sharing our Pumpkin Pie Spice Recipe? How about a pumpkin latte or pumpkin soup, pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin popcorn or sprinkle a little on pumpkin seeds before you roast them.

So you see where I’m heading here, there are a plethora of recipes to use this spice blend with, especially during the fall. So what is in pumpkin pie spice? Simple, it’s a combination cinnamon, ginger, cloves, allspice and nutmeg. All 5 spices scream fall and when you combine them together it’s just the best!

With all of these uses it’s easy to go through a store bought bottle in no time at all. Now you could make it difficult on yourself and add the individual spices to the recipes that are found in a pumpkin spice blend if you’re only going to use it once but really, who does that. Making your own spice blend is easy and saves you time in the long run, plus it gives you an opportunity to adjust the ratios as you get more familiar with the spices involved. Maybe you’re a fan of cinnamon and so you might increase it in your blend or perhaps the ground ginger needs to be reduced for your familys’ tastebuds. You get the idea.

Now that you have your Pumpkin Pie Spice all mixed, what recipe are you going to use it in? There are literally hundreds of recipes, we love this Pumpkin Bread Recipe (it also makes great gifts for the holidays), and these Pumpkin Muffins are perfect for breakfast or dessert, but of course, with Thanksgiving coming, our Maple Pumpkin Pie will be top on the list.

Filling your cupboard with homemade spice blends is really easy, takes just minutes, and is less expensive than buying them already made. Here are a few of our favorite homemade spice blends…

  1. We put pumpkin pie spice in the coffee maker with the grounds. It smells heavenly while brewing and tastes really nice. Thanks for sharing the breakdown of spices. I will be using this in the future.

    • Thanks so much for the idea of adding to coffee while brewing, I’ll have to try it this weekend and add a little cream for a new way to make a Pumpkin Spice Latte.

  2. Great ideas. I just wrote about a pumpkin spice coffee on my blog a few days ago. Reading about all this pumpkin spice makes me want a cup!

  3. I was going to share the same idea as Pary Moppins above. Thanks for the spice blend recipe–it’s WAY more frugal to make your own using the base spices than it is to buy it as a combo. I’ve got an empty cinnamon jar all ready to be filled with some pumpkin spice mix!

  4. Thanks for the breakdown of spices – that is really great to know. I was going to suggest the coffee but I see we are very unoriginal in that!! My family loves baked sweet potatoes with butter and a little pumpkin pie spice sprinkled on top – in fact we just had them last night.

Again thanks for all the great ideas – the idea of putting it oatmeal will probably be our breakfast tomorrow – yum!!!

  5. I love this, I somehow forgot to buy pumpkin pie spice on my last US trip. Maing my own hadnt occurred to me, thanks for the inspiration!
