How to Freeze Hamburger

Sometimes life just gets away from us, time speeds by and we forget to take the meat out of the freezer. I know, it happens to me all the time. A little shortcut that I learned years ago, is to cook and freeze hamburgers.

Cook the hamburger or ground beef in a skillet like you normally would, I don’t add any seasoning or onions. Drain the meat and spread it out on a cookie sheet, add foil for an easy clean-up.

Now, you can either flash freeze it, just place the cookie sheet in the freezer for a few hours or you can add the cooked meat directly to a freezer bag.

Be sure to mark the bags. Another quick tip is to mark them with the meal the meat is planned for…spaghetti sauce, tacos, etc.

Once your hamburger is cooked and frozen, it’s easy to pull together a quick meal with a few more simple ingredients. We love this Taco Ring! Taco meat, Crescent Rolls, and Taco toppings make it a super easy meal, and if the meat is already cooked, even easier.

And in case you forget to pull the frozen hamburger from the freezer sometime in the afternoon…no worries…just open the bag a little, pop it in the microwave and defrost for a couple of minutes.

  1. Great tip for speed cooking. I would like to freeze some ground beef, but not sure how long I could keep it in the freezer. What is your longest storage time? Thanks for the info.

  2. Yes, I love it when I have hamburger already cooked in the freezer! I like your idea of flash freezing on a cookie sheet, too–that would make it easier to get just a little out for a pizza topping or to add to soup. Thanks!
