Homemade Pantry: Red Robin Seasoning

We’re just your typical family, we like to occasionally have a night out with the family. When we do one of our boys favorite haunts is Red Robin Restaurant and their unlimited Red Robin Seasoned Fries. But alas we don’t always have the time or money to get there too often so why not bring the seasoned fries to the boys.

We have a fun little book from CopyKat.com, Dining Out at Home Cookbook and their recipes from some of the best restaurants available. We did find the Red Robin Freckled Lemonade in the book, but no Red Robin Seasoning. So I went on a search to see what I could find. Bingo, there it was the recipe for Red Robin Seasoning was on Food.com. Looks pretty standard, salt pepper, cumin… wait, instant tomato soup. I never thought of adding that to a seasoning mix, I always thought that they got the reddish color in their seasoning from seasoned salt.. you know.

So I don’t know about you but I’ve never seen instant tomato soup mix at our local store, not that I’ve ever looked. So I went searching and came up empty, after trying three stores with no luck I figured it was time to improvise, adapt… you know , hail mary pass. So when I came across the dry spaghetti sauce mix at Walmart I figured it’s got tomato and herbs in it and it just might work.

Yeah, it works. I made some homemade oven fries for the family last night and they went gaa-gaa over them and I’ve got to admit they were great.

When I prepared the fries I tossed them in vegetable oil to get the seasoning to cover and the dry spaghetti sauce mix converted into a liquid and made a nice covering when it cooked up.

  1. Hi Liz and Doug! Wow! That’s terrific! Red Robin fries seasoning! I can’t wait to try it! I have Carrabba’s cookbook and I like their grill seasoning. I’ve made several of their recipes and somehow, they just don’t taste like the restaurant. I think they might leave out some of the ingredients. Then again, maybe not! Copying this recipe! Thanks! Blessings from Bama!

    • I agree…the copy cat recipes just don’t taste 100% the same, must be the dishes you have to clean up 🙂

  2. Looks good….I’ll have to try this seasoning. I’m wondering if the tomato Cup-A-Soup is what they mean by instant tomato soup. The spaghetti sauce mix sounds good, though.

  3. Whitney Baze says

As soon as I read the instant tomato soup part, I immediately thought of the Cup A Soup packets. Our grocery store stocks it right next to the onion soup mix. I’m going to try this ASAP because we don’t have a Red Robin close by.

  4. It’s missing the smoke flavor and the sweetness. The bottle of seasoning lists these ingredients:
Salt, cane sugar, sea salt, spices, dehydrated onion, tomato, garlic, paprika, yeast extract, natural smoke flavor, and silicone dioxide.
I’m wondering if there is a dry version of liquid smoke that could kick it up a notch? They do sell the seasoning at Walmart and amazon but I’d love to make my own.
