We love receiving gifts from our friends’ kitchens, we know from our own experience that any gift you make from scratch means so much more to the person who receives it and will be remembered long after it is enjoyed. We thought it was time to share a gift for the guys, not only to receive but to make. The Brown Ale Caramel Corn is perfect for either the beer lover in your life or the caramel corn muncher.

This is definitely what I would categorize as a guy gift. As a matter of fact when Liz and I were putting this together her comment was, “would you give beer as a gift”. Of course you would, this is even a great alternative to the bottle of wine.

The caramelized malts and slight sweetness of brown ale form the base to this slightly sweet and salty caramel corn. If your looking to try something different, any dark cola or rootbeer can be substituted, especially if your wanting a non-alcoholic alternative.

For the special gift, we used a glass beer mug and tied a tag made from a manila folder right to the handle. Pair it with a case of the Brown Ale and you have an extra special gift that any man would love to receive!

Description

The perfect guy gift for the holidays or a great addition to your Sunday afternoon football game. Recipe from PocketChangeGourmet.com. Adapted from Betty Crocker

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 Cups of popped unsalted popcorn
  • 1 Cup of mini pretzel twists
  • 1/2 Cup salted mixed nuts
  • 1/2 cup brown ale beer (we like Newcastle Brown Ale)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup corn syrup
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with foil and spray lightly with cooking spray
  2. In a large bowl, combine popcorn, pretzels and nuts, set aside.
  3. In a small saucepan on the stove, add the ale and cook over medium heat, stirring frequently until reduced to 1/4 cup, about 6 minutes. Pour ale into a measuring cup to make sure you have 1/4 cup, then return to saucepan.
  4. Add brown sugar, corn syrup and butter
  5. Cook over medium heat until bubbly, stirring occasionally, reduce heat to medium-low and cook for about 5 minutes or until mixture is thickened and syrupy.
  6. Remove from heat and add salt, stir well
  7. Pour over popcorn mixture and toss to coat evenly
  8. Spread mixture onto cookie sheet
  9. Bake for 20 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes
  10. Cool completely, about 1 hour
  11. Break into pieces, store in airtight container

Notes
