After making the Easy Fried Pies, they reminded me of the times that my Mom would make little pies filled with cherries or blueberries, when we were camping. The Iron Sandwich Cooker – aka Hobo Pie Maker – come in aluminum or iron. We suggest the iron, they cost a bit more initially but they will last a lot longer.

There are endless recipes that can be made in the maker – sandwiches of all kinds, and of course dessert too.

Breakfast Hobo Pies

Now we needed to figure out how we could cook breakfast in the Hobo Pie Maker, we found several ways but none that worked for what we had in mind. So after a few tries at making pies… we figured out the best way to make Breakfast Hobo Pies.

Ingredients for Breakfast Hobo Pies

First we need the ingredients for the Hobo Pies – bread (we found white bread worked the best), sausage (cooked), cheese, eggs and butter for spreading.

How to make Hobo Pies

Let me show you how easy they are…

  1. Spread butter on one side of the bread (2 slices)
  2. Whisk 1 egg and pour onto bread
  3. Top with cheese – we used Jalapeno or Cheddar
  4. Top with sausage

We did discover a few tricks during the process…

  • Spraying cooking oil on the Hobo Pie Maker made it easier to remove after cooking
  • We tried using spray butter but it didn’t work as well as a good old fashioned knife and butter
  • If you plan on adding the sausage use fully cooked sausage or cook it before using it in the Hobo Pies
  • We found that cracking the egg in a bowl and whisking it slightly was better than cracking it directly onto the bread

Whether you pitch a tent in the backyard, enjoy a stay-cation at home or if you are loading up the camper to head to the park, these Breakfast Hobo Pies will be a perfect addition to your menu!

Now let’s touch on some of the tips for cooking hobo pies…

  • Let your fire burn for awhile and get a nice bed of hot coals
  • Since campfires/fire pits don’t normally come with a thermostat it is difficult to regulate the heat so cooking times are going to vary but it’s going to average between 4-8 minutes to cook each Hobo Pie
  • Flip often, every 15 seconds. I know it sound excessive but I found it to be the best way to cook them without burning
  • Once the egg is done place the Hobo Pie Maker directly on to hot coals for 5-10 seconds each side to brown the outside of the Hobo Pie

We love camping. Just got back from a wk in the mountains. These look good…will have to try.

  2. We had coal stoves in the 70’s and that’s where we started to make Jaffle Toasts – nowadays we only use them at our braai’s (BBQ’s) or when we go camping, but ours are round, so one looses a bit of bread. Also, I like your fillings, we normally just do ham and cheese or the ever popular Minced Beef mixture! I haven’t seen any square ones yet, but I’ll have a look out for them.
Thanks for keeping to share all these amazing ideas! Enjoy the rest of your week.

  3. you can also put the buttered bread in the maker and add pie filling to the middle to make pies, and if you like you can make icing to drizzle over them when there done I grew up on this and love it, seeing this post brought back lots of childhood memories.

  4. Looking at “hobo pies” gave me an idea. Do you have one of those “sandwich makers” from the 80’s or 90’s? They are kind of like a waflfle iron but allow you to place 2 pieces of bread, filling and 2 more pieces of buttered bread. The only ingredient I would change is use bulk breakfast sausage (browned, drained & crumbled). I’ll bet they would be delish! Use turkey sausage & 2% cheese & some veggies for a healthier version. Maybe a Western Omelet theme? And some salsa to dip the sandwich in?

When I taught Foods/Nutrition to middle school students, I had my students make a Hawaiian Sandwich to practice using the broiler, but the ingredients could be adapted to your Hobo Sandwich and you only have to wait for the bread to toast. Try using a slice of ham(luncheon meat style), a slice of pineapple and a slice of cheese. The cheese should be melted by the time your toast is ready and I’m sure you’ll enjoy the taste.

  6. You can make this on the stovetop too or griddle…

  7. Thanks for this recipe! My family has been doing fruit pies for years in the hobo iron but it never crossed my mind to use them for breakfast. Going to try these with my 4 and 3 year olds when we go camping this week.
